Over the past two months, the Voss lab has been diligently training for Michael Studivan's upcoming reciprocal transplant experiment between shallow and mesophotic depths at the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary. His dissertation aims to uncover the genetic drivers behind mesophotic coral population dynamics, gene expression profiles, and adaptation to shallow depths.
In June, Josh, Michael, Jennifer Polinski, and Harbor Branch Dive Safety Officer Jimmy Nelson will travel to the FGBNMS to conduct a week-long cruise, diving to 70ft and 150ft. The team will be moving Montastraea cavernosa colonies between depths and tracking them for two years.
To train, the team has been practicing sampling techniques, and colony transplantation and transportation at both depths. Check out our Flickr album!
