Voss lab graduate student Erin Shilling successfully defended her master’s thesis research via live Webex stream on October 29th. For her project, Erin treated stony coral tissue loss disease-affected colonies of Montastraea cavernosa in the southeast Florida reef tract using two different methods- a chlorinated epoxy and an antibiotic paste. She then tracked these corals along with healthy and diseased controls via typical field monitoring methods as well as 3D photogrammetry, and was able to gather evidence that the antibiotic treatment was significantly more successful than the chlorinated epoxy treatment, with a 95% effectiveness at healing individual disease lesions.
This project was funded primarily by Florida Department of Environmental Protection with additional support from the PADI Foundation, and the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundation through the Indian River Lagoon Scholarship program. Erin will continue working with the Voss Lab on SCTLD-related projects as the lab manager.
