Voss Lab attends 13th International Coral Reef Symposium (ICRS) in Honolulu, Hawai'i

6/24/2016

Dr. Joshua Voss and graduate students Danielle Dodge, Jennifer Polinski, Alycia Shatters, and Michael Studivan recently attended the 13th International Coral Reef Symposium in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Joshua and Michael gave oral talks and Danielle, Jennifer, and Alycia presented posters. Our presentations highlighted results from our NOAA CIOERT research on mesophotic coral reefs as well as recent findings from our Florida Sea Grant supported investigations of estuarine runoff on coral reefs. Congratulations to Michael who was recognized as one of the four best student presentations out of 450 total.  Special thanks to our colleagues at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa who organized an excellent conference with outstanding opportunities to discuss the latest advancements in coral reef science. The lab's presentation titles and those of our FAU Harbor Branch colleagues who also attended are listed below, along with e-poster links.

Josh: "Exploration and characterization of mesophotic reefs of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary and neighboring banks in the northwest Gulf of Mexico"

Michael: "Comparing genetic connectivity and gene expression across shallow and mesophotic reef corals in the Gulf of Mexico"

Danielle: "Investigating population genetics of the scleractinian coral, Montastraea cavernosa, along the Florida coral reef tract's northern extent"

Jennifer: "Evidence of adaptation in a coral-algal symbiosis at mesophotic depths in the northwest Gulf of Mexico"

Alycia: "Effects of St. Lucie estuarine discharge water and thermal stress on Montastraea cavernosa"

Additional presentations by our FAU Harbor Branch colleagues:

Stephanie Farrington, John Reed, Joshua Voss, Dennis Hanisak, et al.: "Resilience of a Unique Mesophotic Reef in the Gulf of Mexico, USA: a 30-Year Historical Perspective of the Coral Communities as Pulley Ridge Reef"

Lysel Garavelli, Laurent Cherubin, et al.: "Transboundary Management of Coral Reef Commercial Fisheries Using Larval Connectivity"

Mingshun Jiang, Fraser Dalgleish, John Reed, et al.: "Measurements of Underwater Carbonate Chemistry Using a Prototype Hybrid AUV/ROV and Automatic Sensors: a Demonstration Project"

See the abstract book for abstracts associated with these presentations, as well as all the abstracts from the 13th ICRS.
